In architecture, documentation standards and data modeling are foundational, from design and construction to heritage conservation and reconstruction. Research data underpins new building concepts and historical studies, encompassing standards, surveys, GIS, photographs, models, and more.

NFDI4Culture collaborates with the architecture community to develop tools, repositories, and open standards, ensuring long-term, FAIR-compliant data management. The rise of concepts like digital building and smart city, along with the mandatory adoption of BIM, highlights the need for IT solutions that span all phases, from drafting to facility management, urban planning, and economic integration.
These processes involve diverse data types and formats, with CAD models, floor plans, and parametric objects linking detailed building information across scales. Synchronized models enhance collaboration, transparency, and risk management, requiring standardized interfaces and platforms for seamless data exchange.
From a cultural and art historical perspective, long-term archiving, reliability, and interoperability of research data are critical. Retrodigitization and 3D modeling are increasingly vital, linking to other knowledge bases and enriching metadata — especially in image data acquisition and rare object indexing, where transitions to art history are fluid.
