NFDI4Culture Community Art History

Art history is the discipline of the human sciences that examines works of art within their historical, cultural, political, and social contexts. The canon of the classical genres of art history, such as architecture, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and the decorative arts, is continuously expanding to include new forms of artistic expression (such as audiovisual works, performances, etc.). The introduction of digital methods and processes has emerged the field of digital art history.

Data, data formats, and data management constitute an essential part of the daily work of art historians across all professional areas. This necessitates the continuous expansion of digital skills and existing structures to effectively represent and organize the field's diverse manifestations. Against the backdrop of increasingly dynamic digital transformation, it is more than ever the mission of art history to establish resilient structures for preserving cultural heritage (in both physical and digital spaces). Furthermore this includes the critical reflection on research findings and the procession of these to results in a standardized, audience-oriented manner to ensure sustainable access for both the specialist community and the general public.

The aim of NFDI4Culture is to support exchange within and between the communities through a wide range of needs-based services as consulting, training and infrastructure – for a future-proof, networked and internationally relevant art history with societal impact.

In Germany the Arbeitskreis Digitale Kunstgeschichte (within the Verband Deutscher Kunsthistoriker) in particular has made it its mission to promote and connect those who are active in this field. arthistoricum.net – the Specialised Information Service Art, Design, Photography (FID Kunst) – promotes digital research and open access publications on European art and art history, including photography and design.
