NFDI4Culture Community Digital Humanities

Digital Humanities are an interdisciplinary field of research that develops and critically reflects on digital methods, tools, and infrastructures for the study of questions in the humanities and cultural sciences. At the same time, Digital Humanities investigate how digitalization transforms the objects, methods, and epistemic practices of humanities research.

The various areas of application for digital, quantitative research methods in the humanities—such as text mining, network analysis, stylometrics, 3D reconstruction and digital editing—have been brought together under the umbrella term 'Digital Humanities'.

The Association for Digital Humanities in the German-speaking World (DHd) was founded in 2013 and sees itself as a forum and formal representative body for all those in the German-speaking world who are involved in research and teaching—regardless of their academic discipline—in the field of digital humanities. As a regional association, the DHd is both affiliated with the European Association of Digital Humanities (EADH) and a member of the international umbrella organisation, the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations (ADHO).

The basis for collaboration between NFDI4Culture and the digital humanities lies in their shared objectives: establishing quantitative research methods in the humanities; developing and providing digital research tools and services tailored to the needs of the research community; developing and providing appropriate digital infrastructure; and offering support, advice, networking opportunities and training.

NFDI4Culture makes its Culture Helpdesk, web services and training materials available to the DHd community at all times, and supports projects from within the community with tailered letters of intent. Furthermore, NFDI4Culture has supported early-career researchers in the DH community with travel grants for the annual DHd conference (NFDI4Culture Community Funds) and also contributes to the annual DHd conference with its own contributions.

The DHd Association supports NFDI4Culture through participation in the Culture Steering Board and by backing grant applications. It also plays a leading role in the 'Forum geisteswissenschaftliche NFDI'. Furthermore, experts from the DHd working groups (e.g. the Greening DH working group) make their expertise available to the Culture Helpdesk.
The representatives of the DHd Association at NFDI4Culture are Sarah Lang (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science) and Ulrike Wuttke (Potsdam University of Applied Sciences).
