NFDI4Culture Community Media Studies

Media studies is a discipline that deals with the theory, history, and aesthetics of media and media systems. It considers their social functions and technical conditionality, as well as their cultural integration, acceptance, and effects.

Regarding research data, the discipline faces multiple challenges, including the creation of metadata standards for the documentation of research objects, and to develop controlled vocabularies and classifications of the data collected from these objects. Another important aspect is the establishment of collaborative data repositories and research environments, as well as developing non-proprietary tools for online research. In addition, researchers have to deal with the challenge of ensuring the long-term sustainable preservation of their research data and objects.

NFDI4Culture is a platform for networking and discussion on the topic of research data, but also a dedicated point of contact providing guidance to researchers. The consortium provides media scholars with interdisciplinary expertise on issues such as the cataloging, processing, and long-term preservation of collections. Additionally, the affiliated Cultural Research Data Academy (CRDA) organizes subject-specific workshops on data literacy, develops learning materials on the same topic, and offers expert advice and support for the integration of data literacy content into academic curricula.
