NFDI4Culture Community Musicology

Using a wide range of methods, musicological communities generate data on tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Research topics range from musical practice – for example, in concerts and musical theatre, religion and everyday life – through to instruments, the impact and perception of music, and extend to musical scores, editions and music-theoretical analyses.

The generated data includes, for example, historical and current performance data, 3D scans from instrument studies, data from room acoustics research, audio and video data, motion capture data and movement notations, as well as XML mark-ups such as MEI (Music Encoding Initiative) and MPM (Music Performance Markup) in the fields of music editing and performance studies.
Furthermore, digital musicology is constantly working on the maintenance and further development of digital tools, e.g. for the use of artificial intelligence, for the rendering of encoded musical scores, for analyses in music information retrieval, and for optical music recognition based on machine learning.
This process generates data that is subject to copyright and related rights or originates from sensitive contexts; it frequently raises legal questions, which are addressed with the aim of achieving the greatest possible openness whilst adhering to ethical and legal principles.
For musicological research and the cultural sector alike, the use of standardised, interoperable formats for data and metadata is crucial to ensuring the quality of the data collected. A range of subject-specific repositories is available for the publication of data, enabling legally compliant, long-term availability, storage and referencing.
Within the Culture Steering Board (CSB) of NFDI4Culture, the musicologal community is represented by the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung (GfM, https://www.musikforschung.de/) and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML). In addition, our partners include the International Inventory of Musical Sources (RISM, https://rism.info/) and the Specialised Information Service for Musicology ((musiconn, https://www.musiconn.de/), that supports digital research and open access publications.
NFDI4Culture provides answers and support in all these areas in the form of guidance documents, advice and the facilitation of services.
