Workshop: Subsequent Quality Improvement: Analysing, Cleaning and Enriching Data

NFDI4Culture Task Areas "Standards, Data Quality, Curation" and "Cultural Research Data Academy" as well as the Documentation Section of the German Museums Association cordially invite you to the workshop Subsequent quality improvement: Analysing, cleaning and enriching data on 7th July 2023, 9 am – 1 pm (CET). The event will be held online in German language. Participation is free of charge.

Collection data is dynamic data: basically, it has an unlimited lifespan, it is constantly updated, it is never finished. At the same time, new questions are being posed to it, and it is intended to be the starting point for new digital uses that were not even conceivable at the beginning of the indexing process. A not uncommon requirement for collections is to have to merge dispersed, isolated data holdings and bring them to a new common quality level. In all these contexts there is a need for subsequent quality improvement, supplementation and enrichment of the data.

Based on the experiences of the participants, the workshop will start with a collection of typical data quality problems, their causes and possible solutions. In this context, OpenRefine is a flexible and powerful tool for cleaning, transforming and enriching data. Under what conditions can OpenRefine be used successfully for data processing? What should be done if the task is to be outsourced to a service provider? How can you ensure that the new level of data quality is maintained in the daily practice of the institution?  

Active subsequent quality management is a high priority for the museum-digital network platform. After the presentation of its data curation approach and the practical methods of implementation, the focus will be on the overall added value that can be achieved with optimised data in Linked Data scenarios.

- Retrofitting your data: motivations, experiences, insights (whiteboard work)
- Typical data quality problems: causes and solutions (A. Kailus)
- Data analysis and improvement with OpenRefine. Planning and implementing an in-house application (H.-L. Meiners)
- Helping people to help themselves: OpenRefine as a tool for improving the data quality of natural history collections at the Übersee-Museum Bremen (M. Grein)
- Enriching and using object data - facilitating work, creating interoperability, enabling research (J. R. Enslin)
- Discussion

The event is primarily aimed at digital managers or digital curators for cultural heritage collections and related projects, as well as persons involved in process management, the development of digital collection strategies, data publication and consulting in these areas.
