Specifications for XML formats, such as the LIDO format, are important because they clearly define which elements and attributes can be used in specific contexts for a specific purpose. They thus create a common and reliable foundation that allows all members of a specific community to work with a uniform standard, ensuring that content is not modeled “by feel.” As a result, specifications are an indispensable building block for ensuring data quality.
Application profiles for the LIDO format are part of these specifications. They contain a subset of elements and are tailored to specific object categories or use cases. For example, they include additional required elements and attributes, restrictions and conditions for the use of elements or attributes, recommendations for the use of LIDO terminology and other controlled vocabularies, or, where applicable, terminology extensions.
LIDO application profiles can consist of various components: Ideally, they include both textual documentation of the rules (e.g., manual, table/mapping table) and machine-readable rules (XML Schema/XSD+Schematron) for the automated validation of XML files. They are primarily developed and continuously maintained within the framework of the LIDO Working Group as well as various other professional communities and initiatives. In addition, we are currently working on documenting a technical workflow to serve as a tool for schema development.
Our course offers a concise introduction to LIDO application profiles and presents key LIDO manuals. The explanations are supplemented with examples from practical work. The course is aimed at anyone who wishes to use LIDO data in specific contexts or is considering using LIDO for the in-depth cataloging of certain object types, as well as for harvesting and data exchange.
