In collaboration with the Fachgruppe Digitale Musikwissenschaft in der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung, the Cultural Research Data Academy (CRDA) of NFDI4Culture is organising a two-part hybrid expert forum entitled ‘AI in Research and Teaching’ at the Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung in Frankfurt am Main.

It will take place on Tuesday 29 September 2026 from 11.00–12.30 (Part I – Focus: Research) and 14.00–15.30 (Part II – Focus: Teaching).

For the first part of the symposium, which focuses on research, two keynote presentations are planned. These will address opportunities for the productive use of generative AI

in musicological work processes, as well as the problems and risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence systems.

We would like to use the remaining time specifically to involve you, the community. This will take the form of several – very short – lightning talks (approx. 3 mins),

during which you will have the opportunity to present a very specific use case (key questions, see below).

The aim is to gain as broad an insight as possible into the current state of AI use in our field.

All contributions are expressly welcome, ranging from its use as a proofreading aid to vibe-coding or training your own models!

Key questions to be addressed in the lightning talks:

1.) Starting point: What specific task or problem needed to be solved?

2.) Approach: Which tool or model was used, and how? (Please also include details on prompting strategies, workflow, the degree of automation, and much more.)

3.) Summary: What were the outcomes of its use? Where did limitations, errors or unresolved issues become apparent?

For the second part, a fishbowl session on the topic of “AI in teaching” is planned. The focus will be on exchanging knowledge and experiences regarding the situation at your institutions.

Please share your experiences and views on, for example:

  • AI as a subject of teaching
  • AI as a tool for lesson preparation
  • AI as a tool for students
  • the responsibility and role model function of lecturers, and the consequences of AI use
  • roles, job profiles and career prospects in higher education teaching and didactics

We are collecting your proposals for both – lightning talks and ideas for the second part – until 13 September 2026 (23:59) here: https://umfrage.uni-halle.de/FG-DigMus

According to current plans, up to 10 lightning talks are possible in the first part of the event. You will receive feedback by 16 September.

We will be in touch soon with further details on the content; in the meantime, you can find the full conference programme as a PDF here.

Kind regards,

Dennis Ried, Martin Albrecht-Hohmaier, Katharina Bergmann and Andreas Münzmay
