Our cultural heritage faces numerous threats, including natural disasters, fires, accidents, wars, theft, vandalism, cyberattacks, and power outages. Climate change has further intensified these risks.Since autumn 2025, NFDI4Culture has placed a special focus on resilience. We aim to raise awareness of risks and support GLAM institutions and collections in better preparing for crises through preventive measures.

This seminar provides an introduction to emergency planning. Together with our guest expert, Matthias Frankenstein, we will examine the legal foundations and apply risk analysis as a practical tool. A concrete scenario will illustrate the structure of an emergency plan and the significant added value of emergency networks.

Our Speaker

Matthias Frankenstein is Head of Preservation at the ULB Darmstadt (University and State Library) and is responsible for the Darmstadt Emergency Network. He is also a member of the Preservation Committee of the German Library Association (dbv). Thanks to his additional training as a "Specialist Advisor for Cultural Property Protection", he understands both the perspective of memory institutions and the side of emergency services. He works with the latter both preventively and in an advisory capacity in the event of damage.
