On 19 November 2026 (approximately 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), the online workshop ‘Out of the Drawer: Making Research Data from the Arts and Culture Sustainably Visible’ will take place.

The event is organised by the FIDs of the FID Network for the Arts and Culture in collaboration with NFDI4Culture.

Even though data is omnipresent in our digital working world, and is regarded as the ‘raw material’ of a digital service economy or as the foundation of a digital (or digitised) cultural memory, this cannot obscure the fact that the long-term availability of data is anything but a given. This applies not least to cultural data, whose existence or availability is threatened not only by cultural conflicts and geopolitical changes, but also by its invisibility, as it remains ‘dark data’ tucked away in a metaphorical drawer, on hard drives, laptops or external hard drives.

The one-day digital workshop “Out of the Drawer: Making Research Data from the Arts and Culture Sustainably Visible”, organised by the FID Network for the Arts and Culture in cooperation with NFDI4Culture, addresses this topic and uses case studies to illustrate how researchers, FIDs and NFDI consortia are collaborating in practical terms across the data lifecycle to make invisible data visible. Specifically, the workshop will cover aspects such as data curation (including metadata and standardised data), data publication and data literacy, whilst also addressing practical requirements such as data management plans. The case studies are drawn from the work of NFDI4Culture in collaboration with the FIDs arthistoricum.net, Performing Arts, musiconn, Media and Philosophy.
