Wikibase in Knowledge Graph based Research Data Management (NFDI) Projects

23. February 2021, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm CET

Knowledge Graphs are a powerful tool to enable fully compliant FAIR management of research data which is one of the tasks of the NFDI. However, the perfect knowledge graph for your specific research problem and domain might not exist so far. Who is going to  set it up and how? Knowledge Graphs are based on ontologies describing the domain (and application) of reference. They enable mapping, interlinking, and cross connections to resources of other disciplines. To represent research data via knowledge graphs, an appropriate set of  semantic terms and their relationships - an ontology - must be provided. The provision of such ontologies is a challenging effort, especially if the knowledge on an entire research domain has to be represented.

One way to cope with the required workload is to leverage the work force of the entire research community via crowdsourcing, as e.g. possible with Wikibase. Wikibase is a powerful knowledge graph software created by Wikimedia Deutschland. Its largest and best  known instance is Wikidata, a central hub in the Web of Data. In this workshop we are planning to foster the exchange of experiences and best practices in the field of knowledge graph enabled research data management, in particular with Wikibase. FAIR management of research data is one of the cornerstones of the National  Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) programme. Within the NFDI various consortia of partners are all facing similar problems for which a knowledge graph enabled approach is the chosen solution to implement data interoperability and findability. We want to  find out:

- What are the requirements  for a crowdsourcing based knowledge graph solution in the context of NFDI?

- Which of those requirements  can already be addressed by Wikibase?

- How do other research  projects make use of Wikibase for research data management?

- What are the challenges  of knowledge graph based research data management with Wikibase?

- How can/should Wikibase  be improved to cope with the requirements of FAIR research data management?

In the workshop, we will give a brief introduction into the Wikibase platform. Furthermore, research projects already using Wikibase or other knowledge graph enabled research data management will be presented. We are planning to get into conversation with other  NFDI consortia about knowledge graph enabled research data management and the potential application of Wikibase. Therefore, we are inviting interested parties from all active, proposed, and future NFDI consortia from all disciplines to get the conversation  going.

We invite all researchers and data managers from NFDIs that have already been funded or that are in the planning or application phase. Whether you already have finalised concepts for a knowledge graph or are just starting to think about linked data for your  research management, this is the place to discuss your plans and find out about Wikibase as a software solution.
