NFDI4Culture Metadata API

In cooperation with the data competence centre HERMES and the consortium NFDI4Culture we are hosting a two part English-language online workshop on “Scores, Text & Audio: How to Enrich your Research with Annotation Tools and Metadata”.

This workshop introduces a series of annotation tools for musicological research as well as tools for musicological metadata enrichment. This approach promises not only an overview but also different perspectives on topics such as standardisation and interlinking beyond the musicological disciplines. Some tool presentations will be accompanied with a hands-on session offering deeper insights into methods, practical applications and use cases.

On Monday 6th July 2026 part one of the workshop will focus on annotation tools for musicological research. The day will offer a balanced combination of tool introductions and hands‑on sessions for participants. Anna Plaksin (Universität Paderborn) and David Weigl (Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien) will present the mei-friend Editor, followed by a presentation by Evelyn Gius (Technische Universität Darmstadt) on the text annotation tool CATMA. Frithjof Vollmer, William Lepp (both Universität Paderborn) and Nike Lange (Folkwang Universität) will conclude the first day with a presentation of the audio annotation tool Sonic Visualiser.

On Tuesday 7th July 2026 we will continue with metadata and standardised authority data for musicology, with a particular focus on content classification as well as performance research data. Hans Brandhorst (Iconclass) will provide an introduction to Iconclass showing the broad potential this classification system offers for musicological research. After the hands-on session, Kristina Richts-Matthaei (Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur | Mainz) will introduce the MerMEId metadata editor and demonstrate how it enables to create and manage music-related metadata. Katharina Laux (Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB)) from musiconn.performance will show us the musical performance database by demonstrating the stages of cleansing, transforming and processing data sets. Martha Stellmacher (Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB)) will conclude the second day with an overview of repositories of musicological research as well as the NFDI4Culture Helpdesk.

The workshop will be moderated by the organisers Katharina Bergmann (Universität Paderborn), Alexandra Büttner (Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur | Mainz) and Andrea Polywka (Philipps-Universität Marburg).

We can then refer to your material and questions in more detail during the hands-on session.
