Joint Concept for Digital Long-Term Archiving
At the meeting of the Committee on Culture and Media in the German Bundestag on 24 June 2026, the German National Library (DNB), the Federal Archives and the Marbach Literary Archive presented a joint concept for digital long-term archiving. In it, they call for a permanent digital long-term archive to be funded by the federal government. The archive is intended to house digitised versions of texts, images, audio recordings and musical scores that are of particular cultural significance.

Crown Contemporary: Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts creates its own exhibition space for art and experimentation
Crown Contemporary at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Faculty III—Media, Information and Design—is a new space for art and experimentation that deliberately operates beyond traditional exhibition conventions. As a student-led launch, ‘Moving Through’ is a multimedia, collaborative installation by two students from the Experimental Design specialisation—Iggi Bühler and Ron Richard Clarke.

Focus on visual collections: Metadata as the foundation for future-proof image archives
Announcement and Call for Papers: The 'Metadata' workshop series organised by the Visual Regional Geographies research group at the IfL is launching its first instalment. Contributions that present and critically reflect on best practices in image cataloguing within archives are highly welcome. The event series will take place from 11 November 2026 to 12 November 2026 in Leipzig. The deadline for submissions is 10 July 2026.

Experiencing historical clothing in virtual reality using AI
As part of the "HistoVeaR" research project, an interdisciplinary research team is developing new digital methods to realistically reconstruct and simulate historical clothing and make it accessible in virtual reality, as well as to adapt digitally reconstructed garments for use in games and visual effects for film and television.

Lower Saxony launches Culture Cloud: cultural data managed locally, searchable centrally
The "Culture Cloud" project is creating a cultural data infrastructure for Lower Saxony that enables data sets from museums, archives, libraries, heritage conservation bodies and research institutions to be managed locally and searched for centrally. The GWDG is leading the project and, as one of the key IT infrastructure and development partners, is providing the technical basis for the data hub, interfaces, search functions and services. To this end, it is contributing its expertise in cloud and computing resources, secure operating environments, research data management and supra-regional infrastructures such as NFDI and EOSC. In this way, the Culture Cloud is creating new avenues of access to Lower Saxony's cultural heritage.

AI simulation enables a journey back in time to Bach's era at St Nicholas' Church in Leipzig
St Nicholas' Church in Leipzig, as Johann Sebastian Bach would have seen it during his time as cantor in the 1720s, can now be experienced once again through a virtual reconstruction. This computer-simulated journey through time has been made possible by an interdisciplinary project involving Bach scholar Prof. Dr Alexander Grychtolik (Franz Liszt University of Music, Weimar), Prof. Dr Paul Zalewski, Professor of Heritage Studies at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), and the visualisation company Arte4D.

Joint definition of digital sovereignty by Germany and France
Germany and France have drawn up a joint definition of digital sovereignty, with which they aim to reduce technological dependencies and promote sovereign European solutions. The definition describes digital sovereignty in terms of six dimensions, such as legal enforcement mechanisms and the resilience of infrastructure. It is intended as preparatory work for EU legislative processes and is therefore primarily aimed at the European Commission and other EU Member States.

Submissions for IDCC27 are now open! Submissions for IDCC27 will consider the following formats: Papers, Lightning Talks, Posters, Demonstrations, and Workshops. This year's theme is FAIR DO's: Centring People in the Stewardship and Curation of Digital Objects. Deadline for submissions is 3rd July 2026. Call for participation: MusicSphere - User Needs and Requirements Survey
The ECHOES sister project MusicSphere is in the phase of pinpointing user requirements and analyzing community needs. The new Common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage publication The Case for Public AI: Making It Happen with Cultural Heritage was created through an iterative process and in close collaboration with more than 400 professionals from the data‑space community and the Europeana Initiative. ECHOLOT – European Cultural Heritage Optimised Linked Open
In January 2026 the NFDI4Culture co-applicant institution Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB), together with 14 international partner institutions, launched the EU‑funded ECHOLOT (European Cultural Heritage Optimised Linked Open Tools) project, which supports the development and adoption of the Cultural Heritage Cloud (ECCCH). ECHOLOT delivers an open‑source suite that uses AI‑enhanced workflows to curate, enrich and interlink cultural‑heritage data across Europe. The project runs from January 2026 to December 2028. Online Competence Centre in 3D for Cultural Heritage (3D-4CH)
The EU co funded Online Competence Centre for 3 D Cultural Heritage (3D 4CH) brings together partners from the European Union. Its core objectives are to (i) provide open source tools and best practice guidelines for large scale digitisation, (ii) deliver a pan European training programme for curators, conservators and educators, and (iii) enable cross border collaborations such as virtual exhibitions and immersive learning environments.

Subscribe! NFDI4Culture Newsletter

The editorially supervised NFDI4Culture Newsletter is distributed quarterly (February, May, August and November) via the NFDI4Culture mailing list, whose infrastructure is provided by the NFDI association directorate and which has currently over 1300 subscribers. The newsletter is intended to provide a low-threshold and uncomplicated overview of consortial activities. The various issues include an overview of upcoming events, short reports about past activities of the consortium and an optional section in which insights into the consortium's work or services of NFDI4Culture are explained in more detail.
