Digital Transformation in the Sciences
Digital transformation is fundamentally changing the world of science: research data and software, artificial intelligence (AI), automation and digital infrastructures are increasingly shaping research practice and knowledge-generation processes. The paper "Digital Transformation in the Sciences – Current Status and Prospects from the Perspective of the German Research Foundation (DFG)" describes the current state of this transformation from the DFG's perspective and highlights key challenges and prospects. Among other things, it focuses on scientific infrastructures, changing approaches to knowledge, new skills requirements, and the question of how funding and financing can shape digital transformation in a sustainable manner.

'Data corpora for artificial intelligence': DFG funds 51 projects
The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding 51 new projects aimed at creating diverse, high-quality data corpora to serve as a basis for research and development into and with artificial intelligence (AI) methods. This move responds to a significant scientific need for data specifically prepared for the development of AI models.

Preservation of Collections and Cultural Education
The Wüstenrot Foundation supports projects in the fields of literature, art and culture, education, and future-oriented social issues. Of particular interest to libraries are projects aimed at the preservation, cataloguing and dissemination of collections and cultural heritage. Eligible applicants include tax-privileged bodies and public-law bodies in Germany. Applications for grants of up to 25,000 euros may be submitted at any time; for larger grants, the next deadline is 1 October 2026.

Call for Proposals: Open Science Festival
At this year’s Open Science Festival, under the motto “Meet. Share. Inspire. Care.”, researchers, early-career academics, students and staff from libraries and research institutions will come together to exchange ideas and learn from one another. The Otto Friedrich University, the Bamberg University Library and the Commission for Open Science of the Bavarian Library Network are organising the festival on 18 and 19 March 2027 in Bamberg. Proposals for short talks and workshops can be submitted until 15 October, whilst posters and other formats can be submitted until 15 December 2026.

Cyberattack on the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe
(Notification pursuant to Article 34 of the GDPR) The Badisches Landesmuseum was the target of a cyberattack, which was detected on 19 June 2026. Initial analyses by specialist IT forensic experts revealed that data had been unlawfully copied and stolen. The Badisches Landesmuseum immediately reported the incident to the police and is working closely with the relevant investigating authorities, in particular the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) and the Karlsruhe Criminal Investigation Department.

Preserving traditional knowledge: HSBI students at the Minden campus restore a 1970s pinball machine
How can knowledge about the operation and maintenance of old machinery and equipment be retained within companies? Students at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences have developed exemplary technical documentation at the Minden campus, which is extremely helpful for the operation, predictive maintenance and repair of machinery. Their test subject: an old pinball machine from the 1970s. They took the opportunity to repair it and get it up and running.

Further development of the strategic framework for open data
The Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernisation (BMDS) plans to further develop the strategic framework for open data and has launched an online consultation to this end. Interested parties can submit their suggestions on the legal framework, data provision, data use, support and networking for stakeholders, and technological aspects until 15 September.

Call for Contributions (Poster Session & Lightning Talks): The Digital Object VII (26–27 November 2026)
As part of the conference ‘The Digital Object VII: Ground Truth? Museums, Machines and Orders of Knowledge’ at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, contributions for the poster session with lightning talks (3 mins) are welcomed. Research projects and practical experiences relating to the use of AI, machine learning and data-driven methods in a museum context (e.g. cataloguing, image recognition, knowledge graphs, LLMs or bias) may be presented. Applications must be submitted by 15 October 2026 in the form of an abstract of no more than 250 words to ddo@deutsches-museum.de. Submissions from early-career researchers are particularly welcome. Thanks to the support of NFDI4Memory, a travel allowance of €250 can be provided.

Open letter from the AKGWDS on safeguarding digital games as cultural heritage
Science, research and teaching benefit when theories can not only be formulated in abstract terms but are also tangible. In game studies, this requires the games themselves in order to formulate, test and reject theories. This encompasses not only current game media as objects of study, but also the full range of releases from various decades, countries and media formats, as well as their sometimes proprietary playback devices. An open letter from the AKGWDS sets out the need to preserve digital games as cultural heritage.

Cartographer App v2.0.0 is out
Cartographer App v2.0.0 is out: annotate and measure zones in historical music documents, now with GitHub integration and native desktop & Android builds. A major milestone for this open source tool for identifying and annotating zones of interest (like measure bounding boxes) in historical music sources. What's new?: GitHub integration; flexible image import; undo/redo and keyboard shortcuts for a smoother editing workflow; and a cross-platform distribution. Cartographer App is the successor to Vertaktoid, rebuilt on modern web technology (Vue.js), and optionally pairs with the Measure Detector for automatic measure recognition with manual correction. Built for and used by historical digital edition projects in the music encoding community.

Help shape the AI strategy for the cultural and creative sectors
The European Commission has called on stakeholders in the cultural and creative sectors to get involved in developing the AI strategy for these sectors. This strategy is intended to effectively complement, rather than replace, human creativity. Instead, it is intended to promote access to culture and expertise, thereby contributing to a competitive creative economy. Comic collections in the DACH region – network and Wikipedia entry
Since 2023, a network of libraries with comic collections has been meeting; in recent years, it has organised panels at BiblioCon on the subject of comics and, in 2025, will host a DFG round-table discussion in Frankfurt am Main on the exchange between comic research and comic collections in libraries, archives and museums (led by Dr Felix Giesa from the Comic Archive at the Institute for Children’s Literature Research at Goethe University). This group also launched the initiative to create a Wikipedia entry entitled ‘Public Comic Collections in Germany’ to provide a clearer overview of comic collections – initially in German institutions and, in future, hopefully across the DACH region as a whole (the title will then be amended accordingly): https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Öffentliche_Comicsammlungen_in_Deutschland

Furthermore, the organisers would like to organise another panel on the subject of comics for BiblioCon 2027.

Europe's largest collection of historic school murals is housed at the University of Würzburg. More than 2,000 items from the collection are now being prepared for bavarikon, Bavaria's web portal for digitised cultural heritage.

Proceedings of the GND Forum Humanities@NFDI
How can the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) strengthen collaboration between the NFDI consortia in the humanities and cultural studies? Nearly 80 participants addressed this question at the GND Forum Humanities@NFDI on 23 and 24 June 2026 in Göttingen. Under the motto "Reaching out to one another", GND-related tools and services were presented, different perspectives on key GND entity types were discussed, and joint approaches for deeper collaboration were developed. The results of the forum are now documented in three publications and a blog post:

Guidance on IT security for cultural institutions
IT security is an important issue not only for large corporations, but also for cultural institutions such as libraries. The kulturBdigital project has compiled resources that include, amongst other things, basic information on IT security, guidance on creating secure passwords, and checklists for emergencies. The materials have been reviewed to ensure their suitability for the cultural sector. kulturBdigital is a project run by the Technologiestiftung Berlin in cooperation with the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.

Groundbreaking measures agreed for key research infrastructures in Germany
At its most recent meeting, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) took several key decisions: amongst other things, it adopted a new federal-state agreement on funding for the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), which provides for its further development into a "One NFDI" and annual funding of €98.7 million for the period 2029–2038. Furthermore, the GWK followed the recommendation of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and announced continued funding of 71 million euros for all ten NFDI consortia in the second round – initially until the end of 2028. Furthermore, the GWK has decided to make €62.5 million available to the National High-Performance Computing Association (NHR) in 2027, with a further €30.7 million from 2026 to 2030 to expand AI computing capacities at universities. Finally, the GWK approved funding of €3.38 billion for the DFG for 2027, plus €730 million for project funding; it will provide €2.38 billion to the Max Planck Society (MPG) in 2027; and it discussed the outcomes of the AI Pact Forum.

Call for Evidence:
The European Commission has launched a new Call for Evidence whose results will feed into the EU’s AI strategy for the cultural and creative sectors (CSS). The purpose is to gather input on the problems, objectives and possible solutions identified for a “overarching strategic vision for the use of AI in the CSS.” The draft strategy emphasizes that AI should support—not replace—human creativity, safeguard copyright, and promote linguistic diversity and inclusion. The consultation is held as an open‑forum online. After creating an account, participants can post free‑text comments via the “Give Feedback” button. All contributions are publicly visible. The call is open to anyone who feels affected by the topic; there are no restrictions on who may submit evidence. Deadline: 11 September 2026.

ECHOES projects promoting the Cultural Heritage Cloud
ECHOES has launched the first twelve of twenty projects approved in the Cascading Grants 2nd Call “Engagement and Collaboration.” The call invited Cultural Heritage institutions to submit proposals that would raise the profile of the Cultural Heritage Cloud, broaden its user base, and promote skills development and capacity‑building. It in particulary addresses small and medium‑sized heritage institutions. Participants were urged to design a variety of initiatives, such as training workshops, helpdesk support, promotional resources, and any other innovative concepts they wished to implement.

EU Icons for labelling AI-generated content
The EU offers a set of icons for labeling AI‑generated content. Deployers of generative AI systems can use these freely available icons to meet the AI Act’s transparency requirements, and they are intended for creators, publishers, and other system operators. The icons are a central element of Section 2 of the EU’s Code of Practice on marking and labelling AI‑generated content.

EOSC Academy: Dual‑Track Guidance for Joining the Federation
The EOSC Academy provides two engaging tracks that actively guide interested organisations through every stage of joining the Federation—from initial understanding and participation to onboarding services and operating a Node. The ICOM Projects 2026 initiative is a unified annual call for proposals to support ICOM’s network and strategic goals. The new Common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage publication The Case for Public AI: Making It Happen with Cultural Heritage was created through an iterative process and in close collaboration with more than 400 professionals from the data‑space community and the Europeana Initiative. The paper articulates a shared vision for how the cultural‑heritage sector can help build a more democratic, pluralistic and publicly accountable AI ecosystem across Europe.
