Call for proposals: NFDI4Culture Music Award

The NFDI4Culture Music Award is given by the musicological community in NFDI4Culture and intends to recognize music-related or musicological projects and undertakings that contribute in a special way to the goals in the  task areas of the consortium.

For example by:

  • Development of standards for data formats for encoding music-related or musicological research data (see TA1 Digitization and Enrichment of Digital Cultural Assets and TA2 Standards, Data Quality, and Curation).
  • Development of musicological research software (see TA3 Research tools and data services).
  • Contributions to sustainable archiving and making available music-related or musicological research data (see TA4 Data publication and long-term archiving)
  • Strategies for dealing with privacy and copyright issues (see TA5 Cross-cutting technical, ethical, and legal activities)
  • Developing ideas for communicating music-related or musicological research data and results (see TA6 Skills Development and Training - Cultural Research Data Academy)
  • Creating opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration (see TA7 Governance and Administration)

 

The award is presented in two different categories:

Category 1 (Qualification Award): up to 1500 €

Qualification theses (M.A./PhD and comparable) completed in the years 2021/22 from all musicological disciplines the results of which further contribute to NFDI4Culture's work programme and the above mentioned task areas.

Category 2 (Project Award): up to 3000 €

Musicological projects of various kinds by researchers, artists, and persons from the cultural sector which results further contribute to NFDI4Culture's work programme and the above mentioned task areas.

The awardees will be selected by a jury composed of representatives from NFDI4Culture, the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung, the German Music Council and ZenMEM. Beyond the two main award categories, other interesting projects may be selected from the submissions and, after consultation with the applicants, presented by NFDI4Culture in a summarized form in relevant forums, both digital and analog.

The funds associated with the award are earmarked for expenses that contribute to the goals of NFDI4Culture, e.g., travel costs for the participation in conferences or symposia, licensing or access fees for subject-specific literature, software, or information systems, working hours for technical support on a fee basis, publication costs or financial support for workshop organization. The funds must be used by the end of the year 2023 and must be accounted for at the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz by that time. An audit of the proper use of the project funds is carried out by the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz. There is no entitlement to funds related with the award and there will be no forwarding of funds to individual persons or third parties.

Category 1

  1. curriculum vitae
  2. the qualification thesis with the reviews
  3. a description of the project (1-2 pages) that clearly shows how the work contributes to NFDI4Culture goals and how music-related data are included
  4. an overview of the planned use of award funds

Category 2

  1. curriculum vitae
  2. a description of the project (2-3 pages) that clearly demonstrates how it contributes to NFDI4Culture goals and how music-related data are included
  3. relevant publications related to the project (e.g., papers, data publications, tools, reports, exhibitions, or posters)
  4. an overview of the planned use of award funds
