The project Digital Portrait Index of Printed Portraits of the Early Modern Period funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is a joint project of the German Documentation Center for Art History - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, ten other cooperation partners, and an associated partner collection. The goal of the project is the cross-collection virtual publication and systematic indexing of more than 287,000 printed portraits from nine important public collections and libraries. For cultural studies, the Digital Portrait Index offers a new tool for researching wide-ranging art and social science issues as well as one of the most important art genres of the era, the portrait.
