Data of different origins described with standardized terminologies can be understood and used across boundaries, significantly improving their clarity, interoperability, reusability, and thus their quality. Controlled vocabularies, standard data, and application ontologies play an important role in the semantic networking of this decentralized data.

In particular, the humanities and cultural sciences face a special challenge, as they require a broad range of vocabularies for describing and referencing their subjects and concepts (persons, geographics, time indications, corporations, works/objects, etc.), as well as their sufficiently specific indexing. Although there cannot be a vocabulary that meets all requirements equally or is universally recognized as a standard in all domains, we aim to explore overlaps in the handling and understanding of terminologies across all Humanities consortia of NFDI in this event.

The diverse development and application contexts should be considered, along with the following guiding questions: Which areas can be covered by services, and how do these unfold the potential of commonly used terminologies? How can competition among terminologies be positively addressed? Which methodologies promise broad applicability? How can isolated solutions in projects be avoided? How can datasets with local terminology be sensibly connected to large reference vocabularies? How can the greatest possible sustainability be achieved in the development, description, provision, and curation of vocabularies?

The online event is held by "Standards, Data Quality, Curation" on March 20th and March 21st, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m in German. You can find the contact details in the linked registration form.

Registration is possible from February, 15 until March 18, 2024. The link to the online event will be sent by email to registered participants on March 19.

If you have any questions, please contact the coordination office.
