The library as an object & the objects of the library - the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin from the perspective of the arts. A Barcamp with NFDI4Culture.
description

What is this event about?
As part of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation - an interdisciplinary network of museums, research and cultural institutions - the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin has always been committed to the artistic interpretation and communication of its holdings. This is documented, for example, by Olaf Metzel's monumental sculpture Noch Fragen? (Still Questions?) in the central reading room of the Staatsbibliothek Unter den Linden, which is based on objects from its newspaper collection, or its cooperative seminar with the Zurich University of the Arts on researching medieval manuscripts using artistic research methods.

In order to explore the perspective of the arts on libraries using a concrete case study and to sound out possible future fields of cooperation in dialog with artists, the Staatsbibliothek, together with NFDI4Culture and the library of the Berlin University of the Arts, is hosting a barcamp. This open-topic event format, aimed at the joint development and discussion of ideas, is primarily aimed at artists and members of art academies and museums, but also at anyone with a desire to transform the Berlin State Library into a StART library.

What could be possible topics and starting points?
Under the umbrella of the Stabi Lab, the new collaborative-participative experimental space of the Staatsbibliothek Unter den Linden, the planned barcamp will focus on cultural practices that are just as relevant for libraries and other memory institutions as they are for artists and the institutions of the art market - including curating, canonizing, collecting and mediating.

On the one hand, the focus can be on the library as architecture and organization - e.g. with regard to the question of whether and how artistic forms of publication promote the development of alternative library concepts. On the other hand, the event is about the objects of the State Library in their sheer media diversity.

What is a barcamp?
In contrast to a traditional conference with a fixed program and invited speakers, a barcamp is an open format. It thrives on exchange, interaction and participation. In parallel sessions, interested parties come together to discuss topics that have previously been proposed directly by the participants. After a short keynote speech by the minds behind the jointly selected topic proposals, the participants engage in parallel discussions in groups or in a series of sessions. In principle, a barcamp is completely open-ended; it is primarily about exchanging ideas, developing ideas and networking.

The following video gives a good impression of this event format: https://youtu.be/jLnISfPxGWg

How can I take part?
Participation in this event is free of charge. Just come along - we look forward to seeing you!

Session proposals will be submitted directly during the event on the day of the Barcamp. Those who do not wish to submit their own topics can join the proposed sessions and actively participate in them.

Pictures will be taken during the event for the public relations work of the Berlin State Library. By participating, you agree to the publication for non-commercial purposes.
