Performative arts and practices manifest themselves primarily live, in performances and events in front of and with audiences, but beyond that increasingly in media representations. Data on this arises in artistic practice as well as in production, mediation, collection, and research environments. But how should these data be modeled in order to make the respective events and processes clearly referencable, accessible for networked research, and also sustainably usable?

These problems do not only concern the field of theatre and dance studies, but also the subject communities of music, art, media, and film studies, in which the recording of event-related information in the aforementioned sense is also still in its infancy. The aim of this forum is the interdisciplinary exchange about the collection, aggregation and enrichment of event-related data and the development of adequate data models. Last but not least, it will be about questions of artistic research and the mediation of data literacy, about synergies between the disciplines and their infrastructures for (meta-)data and research data.

Workshops on Wednesday, 13.09.2023

• 3D-Modelle für die Performing Arts | Zoe Schubert, Lozana Rossenova (NFDI4Culture Aufgabenbereich "Data capture and enrichment of digital cultural assets") in English

This workshop will introduce the current capabilities for semantic annotation of 3D models in the open source software toolchain Semantic Kompakkt. We will review data upload, annotation and collaboration processes, but the focus will be primarily on open discussion with you – our participants – what are the opportunities for using 3D in the context of performance data. The goal of the workshop will be to gather impressions and requirements from real-world use cases in performing arts and place proposed features on the roadmap of development of the Semantic Kompakkt service with NFDI4Culture.

• FDM-Basiskurs: Audiovisuelle Forschungsdaten | Katharina Bergmann, Andrea Polywka (NFDI4Culture Aufgabenbereich "Cultural Research Data Academy")

In the context of "Basic Courses in Research Data Management", offered by the Cultural Research Data Academy (CRDA), this course focuses on audiovisual media. In the first part, essential terms and topics concerning research data management will be explained highlightening audiovisual data, followed by a project report in the second part. Dennis Friedl will give an insight into his work on the Korngold edition, which, in addition to classical music volumes, is also striving for a hybrid critical edition that will deal with audiovisual data in particular.

• Linked Open Data mit WissKI. Eine Einführung | Robert Nasarek (Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg)

The Scientific Communication Infrastructure is a Linked Open Data extension for the Drupal content management system and makes it possible to create data according to FAIR principles and to publish it dynamically on the internet. The workshop introduces the software with its special features and demonstrates the process and possibilities of semantic data modelling with WissKI using a simple example of the performing arts.

• Mediatheken der Darstellenden Kunst digital vernetzen – Christine Henniger (Internationales Theaterinstitut Deutschland, Mediathek für Tanz und Theater), Sara Tiefenbacher (Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt/Main, mv:dk), Klaus Illmayer (OEAW ACDH-CH)

The presentation of the project “Mediatheken der Darstellenden Kunst digital vernetzen” (mv:dk) deals with the work processes of building an overarching data infrastructure for media library metadata aimed at researching and exploring audiovisual holdings at theatre and dance research institutes, such as universities, art colleges or independent media libraries. The input focuses on project-specific data modelling, which builds on domain-specific ontologies and specifications essential for the description of audiovisual resources.

• Eine Produktionsdatenbank für die Freien Darstellenden Künste – Sören Fenner (Theapolis)

A production database for the independent performing arts - we worked on this as part of a Neustart-Kultur-Projekt 2022. In several interdisciplinary participation forums, we discussed the data model, the question of who is allowed to enter data, relevance criteria, possibilities of use and exploitation and many other topics - and finally tried to develop a production database. In my contribution, I will report on the course and results of the project.

• Datenraum Kultur: Smarte Theaterdienste – Sina Schmidt (Deutscher Bühnenverein)

The presentation shows the Datenraum Kultur, one of the 18 lighthouse projects of the Government’s Digital Strategy. The focus lies on Use Case 3 “Smart Theatre Services”, coordinated by the German Stage Association, which deals with the development of machine-readable play schedules and their added value for the participating cultural institutions. Insights will be given into the development of technical and semantic standards which, in order to ensure the greatest possible interoperability, are based on existing standards such as the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND).

• T-MIGRANTS: Theatermigrationen und ihre Daten – Berenika Szymanski-Düll, Jorit J. Hopp (Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München)

The nineteenth century was a century of mass migration. The fact that a large number of migrants were theatre professionals at the time is to this day largely unexplored. The project T-MIGRANTS (www.t-migrants.com) tries to investigate this group of actors - which we call theatre migrants. In addition to individual case studies, one of the main goals is to collect, analyse and make digitally accessible a body of data on theatre migrants. For this purpose, we have developed a database that serves as a repository for our data and at the same time provides a basis for its analysis and visualisation. The presentation will give an insight into the current state of this work.

• Tanz/Musik digital – Vera Grund (Universität Paderborn)

The aim of the project "Tanz/Musik digital" is to develop, for the first time, an editing method with which the information of the multifaceted sources on dance can be digitally linked in a comprehensive multimodal structural model. The project's approach takes the interdisciplinarity of dance and music into account in a special way by linking four-dimensional movement analyses (spatial dimensions and temporal progression), visualisations and analyses of dance poses, animated gestures and dance steps with information from music, images and texts.

• #vortanz. Automatisierte Vorannotation in der digitalen Hochschultanzausbildung – David Rittershaus (Hochschule Mainz)

With the three-year (2021-2024) BMBF joint project "#vortanz - Automated pre-annotation in digital university dance education", the Motion Bank project of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences (motionbank.org) has been given the opportunity to revise and expand its own software system for annotating dance, which emerged from the Forsythe Company in Frankfurt. This includes a stronger orientation towards the needs of university dance education and artistic teaching as well as the development and connection of a modular cluster for automated video analysis using machine learning methods. The article presents the background of the project and the software, which can also support work with audiovisual media beyond dance.

Specialised Information Service (FID) music, art/photography/design, media, communication and film studies, performing arts

The Specialised Information Service (FID), whose development and expansion have been funded by the DFG since 2014 as information infrastructures for science, offer a primarily digital and location-independent supply of information oriented to the special needs of the subjects. For the subjects participating in NFDI4Culture, the subject information services Performing Arts (performing arts.eu), Art (arthistoricum.net), Media and Communication Studies (adlr.link), and Musicology (musiconn) provide valuable data work. In the FID network Arts & Culture, the participating FIDs coordinate among themselves, among other things, on acquisition and licensing as well as the provision of freely available resources.
In addition to the presentation of targeted offers of the FID on event data, the discussion will also focus on how the cooperation with the NFDI4Culture consortium can be sensibly designed and structured. What points of contact and synergies can be harnessed to agree on and promote standards?

Following their stage play "parallel situation" (2017), Barbara Lubich and Anna Till create scenic situations for a seminar room. In „parallel situation“ dance and photography meet in real time. In a performative dialogue, Barbara Lubich and Anna Till negotiate the power of images. The stage space transforms into image surfaces and movement becomes the motif. Parallel Situation" is about the creation of images, about the atmosphere they contain. Is a photo just a surface, an object, or is it an imagined, a narrated image? And what role does what once took place? "parallel situation" tells in and with photographs in an impressive way about movement and stasis, forms and colors, light and sound and thus creates a leap that connects dance history and present as well as the disciplines of dance and photography in a surprising way." TILL&LUBICH

The two artists Anna Till (dancer and choreographer) and Barbara Lubich (filmmaker and sociologist) act under the label TILL&LUBICH, whose careers have repeatedly sought overlaps in recent years. The logical consequence: a common form, which finds its correspondence and scope in TILL&LUBICH. And in it a cosmos of film, dance, performance and installation emerges. An interdisciplinary mediation between art, science and experiment.

The Performing Arts SIG of the German National Library's Standardization Committee officially began its work in January 2023. The formation of the WG was preceded by a more than one-year process of understanding within the professional community about the specific needs of research and memory institutions as well as the desiderata within the GND in the field of performing arts. In the spirit of successful community empowerment within the GND collaborative, work assignments were jointly developed to improve the data quality and situation for dance and theater research as well as for performing arts memory institutions. The two speakers present the Performing Arts WG with selected examples of the individual work packages.
